County Proximate Universities

Counties have real challenges and opportunities in the use of digital health systems that require real solutions and engagements. Universities, on the other hand, are regarded as knowledge hubs that have valuable resources such as staff, students, and facilities that counties can greatly benefit from.

HealthIT working with private and public institutions such as universities offers sustainable proximate support to counties through tech support, capacity building (both face to face and online), Health Informatics Research, and Innovation. HealthIT supports the universities to build the capacity of county governments on the use of the different National health information systems such as the Kenya Health Information System (KHIS), Kenya Master Health Facility List (KMHFL) KenyaEMR, and Child Protection Information Management System (CPIMS).HealthIT's purpose is to strengthen national policies, strategies, standards, and reporting related to Kenya's Health Information System (KHIS), to ultimately enhance evidence-based decision making and support service provision at national and county levels. The County Proximate Universities support the realization of this goal, particularly at the county level.HealthIT currently provide county proximate support through 7 universities namely: Chuka University,Kabarak University,University of Kabianga,Masinde Muliro University of aScience and Technology,Rongo University,Maseno University,and the Technical University of Mombasa.

HealthIT trains CPU faculty and interns on the different national health information systems through digital health academies, generation of Health Information Systems (HIS) research questions, and HIS hackathons. The CPUs then provide technical support, build the capacity of county personnel, and support system evaluation activities at the county level

Research findings on Health Informatics track being supported by the University of Nairobi Department of Computing and Informatics are aimed at informing key national policies through collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other USAID Strategic Information (SI) mechanisms. The CPU model is part of our strategy on sustainability and the journey to self-reliance by national and county governments.
